What is kiln-formed glass?

Glass specially made for firing in a kiln is cut, arranged, and fired multiple times to create a unique glass item. Sheet glass is often embellished with frit (small "chunks" of glass), stringers, and glass enamel paints. The first firing fuses the components together. The glass is then fired one or more times to incorporate additional design elements or shape 3-dimensional items. Each firing takes from 12 to 30+ hours depending upon the process, size, thickness, and design of the glass.
